We will embark on a fascinating day tour of Athens and explore the ancient sites that have made this city the birthplace of Democracy and an epicenter of Western civilization. We’ll begin our journey at the Acropolis, the most famous site in Athens Climb up the hill to the Parthenon, the iconic temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, and marvel at its stunning architecture and intricate sculptures. Visit the nearby Theater of Dionysus, the oldest theater in Greece, and imagine the performances that once took place on its stage. You can also explore the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, an ancient amphitheater that still hosts performances today.

The day will be focused on the origins of democracy. For centuries, ancient Athenians experimented with a variety of political regimes until they invented the one that suit them best... or so they thought! Learn the backstory on how democracy was born, and understand its principles, its values, the purposes it served and, ultimately, the reasons for its failure.

After exploring the wonders of the Acropolis, you can continue your tour to other ancient sites in Athens. Visit the Ancient Agora, the marketplace that was the center of Athenian public life for centuries. Here you can see the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples, and the Stoa of Attalos, a beautifully restored building that now houses a museum. You can also visit the Roman Agora, which was built during the Roman occupation of Athens and contains several notable buildings, including the Tower of the Winds, an ancient weather station. Day 8

From Athletic Glory to Wine Tasting Delight 0 extra activitiesexpand image

We’ll start our day by exploring the ancient ruins of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, where visitors can walk in the footsteps of ancient athletes. It is here that the Olympic Games were first held over 2,700 years ago, and the site is steeped in the rich legacy of the ancient Greeks. Visitors can explore the ruins of the stadium, gymnasium, and temple of Zeus, as well as the ancient Olympic Village and the Archaeological Museum. Here, you can see some of the most impressive artifacts from the ancient world, including the famous statue of Hermes and the Nike of Paionios.

Afterwards, we will head to Patra and the Achaia Clauss Winery. Established in 1861, the winery is famous for producing high-quality wines using traditional methods. We will tour the facilities and learn about the history and techniques of wine-making. Afterwards, we will enjoy a wine-tasting session and sample some of the delicious wines produced by the winery, including the famous Mavrodaphne, a sweet red wine that is a favorite of locals and visitors alike.

We will return to Athens in the evening, where we will enjoy a special farewell dinner
